I was an anxious child when I was growing up and worried a lot. I was a perfectionist, so I would get worked up about the homework I brought home at night. I especially had a hard time with math, and I remember just sobbing up in my room because I didn’t understand how division worked. And then I worried that I would never pass 3rd grade. And then I was worried that I wouldn’t have any friends because all my classmates were younger than I. And, I fretted, how would I ever get a job or my license or a dog later in life if I didn’t know how to divide? It was a domino effect.

I worried about sickness, natural disasters, and even taxes. Taxes seemed so hard to do, and how would I know when I’m supposed to fill them out? How will I even know how to fill them out if I don’t know division? Naturally, I was a pretty high-strung child.

But I found, at my most anxious moments, a cure. My parents’ rocking chair in the living room, the rocking motion was so soothing that it usually calmed me down pretty fast. Later in life, I learned how to healthily deal with my anxiety, but I’ve always had a fondness for rocking chairs since.

Until I discovered glider chairs. Don’t get me wrong, I still like rocking chairs, but if rocking chairs were Clark Kent, then glider chairs would be Superman. Okay, bad example since they’re both technically the same guy, but you know what I mean.

Glider chairs have a smooth horizontal motion; whereas, rocking chairs have an arching, rocking motion. And, depending on the surface, rocking chairs can be a little bumpy as they roll over uneven surfaces or knots in the floor. The effect is jarring and uncomfortable. Gliders have a stationary base, and the gliding motion comes from the chair itself, not touching the floor. And this particular Cedar Country Hearts Rocking Glider is equipped to be an outside chair as well. Cedar is a very strong, durable wood which can weather the weather, and if you’re a nature person like I am, it’s great to have an outside glider. Cedar patio furniture is a wonderful thing.

I’m not trying to hate on rocking chairs; rocking chairs have made me who I am today. But I find the comfort and smooth motion of gliders particularly alluring. Not that I’m trying to push patio furniture on anyone, but I think everyone deserves a “favorite chair.” And, I find gliders exhibit that certain relaxation and ease everyone desires.

My husband and I have very different levels of comfort. Take camping, for instance: my husband is content in a flannel sleeping bag on a soft dirt ground under a big, bushy tree. A two person tent is just icing for him. I, on the other hand, consider a hotel room with a hot tub and continental breakfast roughing it. Sometimes, those hotel donuts can be dangerously stale.

My husband could survive on a jar of peanut butter and beef sticks. Cooking is when you put something in a microwave. I, on the other hand, will only eat something if it’s been marinated, sautéed, fricasseed, flambéed, or trussed. Saffron is my salt and pepper.

My husband loves swimming in lakes; I adore soaking in a Jacuzzi. My husband enjoys growing vegetables in the garden; I’m a fan of the Green Giant frozen veggies. I like pedicures; my husband thinks that’s a type of French poodle.

So, when we were looking at patio furniture, we naturally had different opinions. My husband wanted to get some stumps for the backyard. I was enchanted by this SouthBay Deep Seating Collection. The deep seating combined with 6” cushions meant that when I sat down, I literally sank into these blissful, relaxing chairs. Plus, because they’re Sunbrella cushions, I had dozens of bold, rich colors to choose from. I was sold.

My husband said we could get cushions for the stumps. But, I told him, this set was made from Teak wood. Its natural oils keep it resistant to slitting, temperature changes, insect attacks, and decay. And, the Sunbrella cushions are designed to repel water, not fade, mildew-resistant, and water-repellant. Comfy yet hearty. My husband, though still fond of the stump idea, compromised on this deep seating furniture. It’s been a perfect combination for both of us.

“When I was a senior in high school,” my uncle said to me, “I was about 6’4”, toned, and cocky.” My grandpa was only 5’1”, but was still fit from being in the Navy. My grandma was also short, so who knows how all their sons ended up being six foot giants. Grandpa blames the power plant.

My uncle was watching TV one summer afternoon, and Grandpa asked him to come help him clean out the garage.

“I’ll be right there,” my uncle said, irritated. But he kept watching his show. A little later, Grandpa came back in and asked my uncle to come help clean. “I will after this show,” my uncle waved my grandpa off. However, another show later, my uncle was still sitting on the couch. Again, my Grandpa told my uncle to come out to the garage. “I’ll come out when I’m ready to!” my uncle yelled impatiently. Without a word, Grandpa grabbed the couch from the bottom and flipped it over. My uncle nearly rolled through the wall. Calmly putting the couch back into place, my grandpa addressed my dazed uncle on the floor, “You ready to now?”

This was one story among many that I heard sitting with my family out on my uncle’s outdoor patio furniture. He had a set much like this Brianna Armchair furniture set, and we spent a lot of time out there telling stories; stories I probably wouldn’t have heard otherwise. My grandpa died when I was young, so I don’t have stories I can remember about him.

But then, my uncle decided to get rid of this teak patio furniture set (which was sad because I had so many memories connected with it) and get a new one. But, the next time we visited, he still hadn’t bought one yet. We spent the time in the living room with my uncle’s 65 inch TV. There wasn’t much storytelling. There wasn’t even much conversation. And I started to really miss my uncle’s patio furniture set. Not that I missed the actual chairs, but I missed the storytelling which they inspired.

Free from distraction and noise, out there we were free to just talk.

I know Christmas shopping is past, but I’m still licking my wounds. It takes me weeks to gear up to go shopping at the mall. On normal days, the mall is sparsely populated, and you can lazily stroll around window shopping admiring the elevator music and smelling the fake dusty roses. But during Christmas, it becomes Lord of the Flies.

Though I normally face the mall alone, this year I went out with a friend. My policy for Christmas shopping is, “This is going to suck, so let’s shop fast so it will suck less.” Her policy for Christmas shopping is, “Christmas is an experience, so let’s look at everything on the shelf and bask in the glory of this marvelous holiday.” We were literally in the mall for six hours to get five gifts. I love my friend to death, but when we stopped to admire the Christmas lights on the faux palm trees by the bathrooms, I just about lost it.

I needed to sit down. The mall had an ample amount of benches for weary shoppers to pass out on, but I have a thing about sitting next to strangers. It’s just hard for me to sit right by someone I don’t know. What if they’re saving that seat for someone? What if they get weirded out by me sitting next to them? What if they have a criminal record?

And then this Curve Love Seat bench appeared out of nowhere like an oasis in the desert. Though one bench, the “S” curve design was an ingenious border between two seats. I didn’t have to sit right next to a stranger, and both seats faced opposite directions, so I didn’t even have to go through the awkward eye contact. A beautiful piece of teak patio furniture, I can honestly say that was the highlight of my shopping experience. So six hours, two presents, and a few cracked ribs later, we made it out of the mall, but I don’t think I would have survived without that lovely patio bench.

My husband’s Grandma has a great deck and patio furniture area in her backyard. Her husband made the deck by hand—as in hand sawed each board, nailed each piece, and dug each hole for the support beams. Her son offered to pay someone to install a new deck because during the summer, the swelling of the boards causes the nails to slightly pop out of the boards, which is a little hazardous.

“Oh,” Grandma says, “I just go out with a hammer and hammer them back in.”

“Mom,” her son says, “Dad put like 25 nails in per board.” But, her husband hand-made that deck, and there’s no way you could want to rip that up.

Last summer, they had a terrible storm, and a tornado actually touched down close to her house. She was fine, but her patio furniture had been blown into the next state. Her glass top patio table had been smashed against her house, and shards were everywhere. The deck was fine, however. Those 2.3 trillion nails had held it down well.

But she needed new patio furniture. She wanted something with an umbrella and cushion seats, but I suggested that she look into cedar or teak furniture like this 5pc Oval Dining Chair Set, or something that wouldn’t leave pikes of glass all over her yard. She should have lovely patio furniture to enjoy her husband’s gorgeous deck, but I’m thankful that she has something a bit safer in her outdoor area now.

During the summer, we have a lot of outdoor fires in our backyard in our wood burning fire pit. It’s mostly so we can have some family time and talk . . . as well as burn all the twigs that have been choking up our yard. The problem we’ve run into is the right kind of seating for our fireside chats.

We’ve never been the traditional outdoor patio furniture set people, so first, we bought some cheap green plastic chairs. They resembled chairs, but they were missing a few key qualities . . . like being able to sit on them. They wobbled and creaked when you sat down, but since we lost the receipt, we were married to them. However, after one of them collapsed because one of the legs melted from being too close to the fire, they were trashed.

Next, we got a used porch swing and attached it to our tree. It was a favorite seat by the fire . . . until it dropped from the branch and sent us rolling across the yard. So for his birthday, my dad asked for an Adirondack chair. He had tried one out and loved it. It’s contoured and has a deep seat which makes it ultra comfortable. My dad got his birthday wish, and now he has the most comfortable chair on our outdoor fire nights. But not for long, I think we’re all going to ask for an Adirondack chair for our birthdays.

I hadn’t hear of deep seating furniture until I got two deep seating chairs for my porch which came with comfortable white cushions. What I first noticed when I sat in these is that it took a lot of pressure off of my body. I have a lot of neck problems, often waking up with neck pain or developing it throughout the day. Consequently, I also deal with a lot of headaches.

I felt, when I sat back in one of these chairs, an almost instant relief to my head and neck. It positioned my back in such a way where I had straight posture without the pressure, preventing me from slouching or hunching my shoulders which I do in regular chairs. The deep seating style cupped my lower back and upper body and gave me instant relief.

Although I enjoy them regularly, these chairs have also been dubbed my “headache chair” where I go to try and relieve head and neck pain. Though originally purchased as my porch and outdoor patio furniture chairs, during the winter I bring these chairs in, so I can enjoy them inside as well. If you’re looking for a comfortable, relaxing type of chair, I would recommend investing in a deep seating chair.

I remember growing up this wicker table my aunt had. I really liked it because the woven wicker looked like a piece of furniture that would be in one of the fantasy books I liked to read. But, her table was kind of old and pieces of wicker would poke out in places. I remember scraping and cutting my hand on that table once on one of the pieces.

I recently got married a few months ago, and my husband and I are starting to look at indoor and outdoor furniture to buy. I really wanted a wicker coffee table. However, I learned of a new type of wicker, resin wicker, that has the look and feel of real wicker, without the disadvantages. Natural wicker can crack, get dry, or grow mold. Plus, you have to repaint it a lot if you get that classic white look.

Resin wicker is great, especially for wicker patio furniture, because it’s constructed of synthetic polyethylene (a type of plastic) that’s very durable. I like it because it’s low maintenance. You don’t have to paint it, it won’t dry out, it won’t poke out at you, and it won’t rot. Plus, it virtually looks like real wicker. So, my husband and I got a resin wicker coffee table, and it’s absolutely fabulous!

I think there’s a certain kind of class system when it comes to the wood of patio furniture. Maple is the common farmer. Oak is the artisan and merchant. Cedar is the rising noble. Teak is the lavish monarch. The advantages and style of Teak patio furniture out-shines any other kind, be it Rattan or Cedar patio furniture, when it comes to your patio chairs and loungers.

Teak has its own natural oils which keeps it looking lush; whereas, other woods you must keep applying stains and finishes to keep them looking good. Teak has practical advantages, like a resistance to decay and splitting, but it also has been recognized as an elegant and decorative wood. Asian temples have been using Teak in their temples for centuries, and India almost exclusively uses Teak in decorative designs and gardens.

The beauty of Teak alone sets it apart for wood work and flooring and makes it a higher end material for your patio furniture. It’s among the more durable woods used for chairs and tables, it doesn’t succumb to swelling or shrinking as much as other woods which can lead to cracking, and it’s very light, so you don’t need a fork lift to move your patio furniture around. As far as your outdoor area is concerned, Teak is a king among wood.
